Wellness Grant Program
The Wellness Grant program supports community-led wellness initiatives that positively influence healthier lifestyles and community well-being. Grant streams are structured around our five pillars for chronic disease prevention.
- What is the Wellness Grant Program?

The Department of Health and Wellness recognizes the importance of health promotion to reduce reliance on the health system and positively influence healthier lifestyles and community well-being. The Wellness Grant program has been designed to support local efforts to enhance community-based resources, systems, and networks that can positively influence health outcomes and make healthy choices easier for all Islanders. The program provides support for active engagement and collaborative approaches to addressing the social determinants of health and preventing chronic disease.Since 2015, the Wellness Grant Program has funded over 100 projects.The Wellness Grant Program provides funding to support initiatives guided by health promotion principles in the following areas:
- Physical Activity
- Tobacco Reduction
- Healthy Eating
- Responsible Alcohol Use
- Mental Wellness
- Types of Grants Available

Community Catalyst Grant
The PEI Wellness Grant Program’s Community Catalyst Grant provides an opportunity for Island municipalities to build local capacity and mobilize around wellness efforts in their communities. The intention of the Community Catalyst Grant is to support community-led health and wellness initiatives that lead to outcomes such as: new knowledge or resources; asset-mapping and skill-building; and increased capacity for sustainable action on healthy living within communities.
Possible project outcomes include: project plan or strategy; knowledge-building/information sharing; programs, activities, and services; policy development at municipal or organizational level.
*At least one of the priority areas of action listed in the criteria below must be a primary focus, outcome, or aim of any proposed program, activity, and service.
Eligible applicants include:
• Mi’kmaq First Nations or other Indigenous communities
• Municipalities
Community groups/organizations are encouraged to partner with municipalities on an application; however, the municipality must be the project lead and principal applicant.
*Proposed projects must align with the Wellness Grant Program funding priorities and meet eligibility requirements of the Community Catalyst Grant.

School Health Grant
The PEI Wellness Grant Program’s School Health Grant provides support for schools to engage and mobilize students, staff and the local community around health and wellness. The aim of this grant is to support schools in using an integrated approach to identifying student health needs and taking action to improve them. The Grant is designed to support projects that use a Comprehensive School Health approach to advance student health and health-promoting school environments.
Project outcomes include: project plan or strategy; knowledge-building/information sharing, resource development; programs, activities, and services.
*At least one of the priority areas of action listed in the criteria below must be a primary focus, outcome, or aim of any proposed program, activity, and service.
Eligible applicants include:
• All public and private grade K-12 schools in Prince Edward Island
• Schools located in Mi’kmaq First Nations or other Indigenous communities
Community groups/organizations are encouraged to partner with schools on an application; however, the school must be the project lead and applicant.
*Proposed projects must align with the Wellness Grant Program funding priorities and meet eligibility requirements of the School Health Grant.
