Morell Legion Seniors: Taking Care of Ageing

Healthy ageing isn't just about living longer. It's about maintaining the strength, confidence, and independence to keep doing the things that make life meaningful. One of the most effective ways to support healthy aging is through regular physical activity.

That's why Morell Legion Seniors launched Taking Care of Ageing, an initiative focused on helping older adults build the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to stay physically active as they age.

Moving with Confidence

Through more than 15 weekly sessions, participants learned practical ways to improve their strength, balance, mobility, and overall well-being. Programming focused on exercises and strategies that could be continued at home, giving participants tools they could use long after the program ended.

Recognizing that staying active involves more than movement alone, the program also included sessions on nutrition, mental wellness, stress management, and fall prevention. Participants learned about the important role protein plays in maintaining strength as we age, along with techniques such as deep breathing to support relaxation and mental well-being. Participants learned how to reduce their risk of falling, what to do after a fall, and how to safely get back to their feet. While falls can be a serious topic, the hands-on "get-up" demonstrations quickly became a favourite activity, with plenty of laughter mixed in with the learning.

Building Strength for Everyday Life

The impact of the project was far-reaching, connecting with approximately 60 households and attracting an average of 25 to 30 participants at each session.

Participants were highly engaged throughout the program, frequently asking questions of guest speakers and encouraging one another as they learned. Conversations frequently turned to the importance of preventative health and how regular exercise can help older adults maintain their independence, reduce hospital visits, and remain in their homes and communities longer.

"This was an amazing experience to see so many embrace the idea of taking charge of their own health. We are often looking for this info online." - Participant

Movement for the Future

The project has already inspired action. Many participants continue to practice the exercises they learned through the sessions, and several have joined, or are planning to join, local seniors' fitness classes.

By combining physical activity, education, and meaningful social connection, Morell Legion Seniors created a program that empowered older adults to take a proactive role in their health. Most importantly, it provided participants with practical tools to stay strong, stay active, and maintain their independence for years to come.

We're proud to have supported this initiative through our 2025-26 Live Well PEI Community Catalyst Wellness Grant Program.
