Wellness Grant Feature: Colonel Gray Diversity Appreciation Club

Belonging has a profound impact on student well‑being. When students feel seen, connected, and valued, they’re better able to grow, learn, and thrive. That’s why our Wellness Grant Program supports initiatives that build inclusive and supportive school communities.

At Colonel Gray High School, the Diversity Appreciation Club is a shining example of this work, creating spaces where students can celebrate their cultures, form new connections, and take pride in their identities.

Where Differences Become Strength

Colonel Gray is home to students from over 70 countries, making it one of the most culturally vibrant school communities on the Island. Yet students and staff identified a gap: few intentional spaces existed to connect, share, and celebrate cultural differences. The Diversity Appreciation Club was created to change that.

Throughout the year, students led a range of activities including cultural craft nights, newcomer‑friendly social outings, art installations, and their signature event — the International Coffeehouse. This student‑designed celebration invited the entire school community to experience global food, music, and performances, creating meaningful opportunities for connection and understanding.

Throughout this project, I saw firsthand how cultural expression, connection, and community can positively influence student health. The Diversity Appreciation Club gave students a supportive space where they could build friendships, reduce stress, and feel proud of their identities.”

Making an Impact Through Culture and Connection

The initiative reached an estimated 250–300 students, with more than 50 taking active roles in planning, cooking, crafting, performing, or supporting cultural displays. The International Coffeehouse alone welcomed nearly 200 students, staff, and families.

For many newcomer students, the project made the school feel more welcoming and inclusive. Others formed new friendships they may not have made otherwise.

“The International Coffeehouse was such an exciting event and did an incredible job promoting diversity and inclusivity within the school. I got to perform my traditional dance, kathak, in front of students, teachers, and families… Everyone was so welcoming and energetic — it made the night a lot of fun!”

The project also transformed school spaces. Cultural artwork and displays now line the hallways, making diversity visible and celebrated every day.

Looking Ahead

The Diversity Appreciation Club plans to build on this year’s momentum by offering new cultural workshops, expanding student leadership opportunities, and hosting the International Coffeehouse annually. These next steps aim to further support a school environment where every student feels valued, connected, and proud of who they are.

For schools considering applying for a School Health Wellness Grant, this project is a beautiful example of what’s possible when students are encouraged to lead with creativity, compassion, and cultural pride.
