Wellness Grant Feature: Special Olympics PEI Nutrition Initiative
When it comes to performing at your best—whether on the field, at work, or in everyday life—nutrition plays a vital role. For many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), it can be challenging to get access to clear, easy-to-understand nutrition resources.
That’s why one of our Community Catalyst Wellness Grant recipients, Special Olympics PEI, launched their initiative Sport Nutrition for People with Intellectual Disabilities. This project was designed to break down barriers to healthy eating. With support from our Community Catalyst Wellness Grant, athletes, families, and support networks are now gaining hands-on, practical tools that make healthy choices easier and more enjoyable.
Meeting a Need Identified in the Community
The idea for this project emerged after pilot sessions with Special Olympics Team PEI and data gathered from seven Health Promotion screenings during SOPEI events. The results revealed a clear gap: while plenty of nutrition resources exist, they aren’t always presented in ways that are accessible for people with IDD. This contributes to broader health disparities and missed opportunities for performance and overall wellness. Special Olympics PEI set out to change that. They created tailored, easy-to-understand nutrition education that empowers athletes and their support networks.
Making an Impact On and Off the Playing Field
The project has already reached 21 athletes, along with 5 caregivers and 3 group home staff during its fall-winter sessions. With spring-summer sessions underway, that number is expected to grow to 75–100 individuals, including families, caregivers, and support staff.
The goal is simple but powerful: to help athletes and families understand why healthy eating matters and to empower them to prepare great pre-, during-, and post-exercise snacks and meals. These lessons don’t just help on game day—they support better overall health and performance in all aspects of life.
“This has helped me become a better athlete at competition and at work.”

Looking Ahead
Building on the momentum, Special Olympics PEI plans to develop new resources on topics like advanced sport nutrition, hydration, and environmental considerations.
Through this project, Special Olympics PEI isn’t just teaching athletes what to eat—they’re helping them understand why it matters. By fostering better eating habits and practical skills, the initiative is setting the stage for improved performance, greater independence, and healthier lives.
We are proud to support such inspiring initiatives through our Wellness Grant Program.
